We are very lucky to be situated in this picturesque part of the world, here in Piltdown, East Sussex. Our pub is named after the notorious Piltdown Man hoax, and in addition to our unique history, we are also surrounded by fantastic walking trails.

The Piltdown Man is a welcome retreat for walkers seeking good food, a refreshing drink, and the cosiness of a traditional pub.

Whether you’re up for a gentle stroll or a more challenging hike, you’ll find a trail that suits you.

Piltdown Pond circular walk

This easy walk of approximately 3 miles takes you around the peaceful Piltdown Pond, where you can enjoy wildlife spotting and the serene water views.

Wealdway trail

The Piltdown to Blackboys section of this popular and pretty route is moderately difficult and covers approximately 7 miles. This part of the Wealdway trail offers stunning views and takes you through charming villages and ancient woodlands.

Ashdown Forest walks

With routes of varying difficultly and length, Ashdown Forest has a network of trails through beautiful heathland and woods. It is well known as the setting for A.A. Milne’s Winnie the Pooh stories.

Fletching to Piltdown circular walk

This circular walk from Fletching involves tracks over fields and downland, with many stiles to climb over. This moderately difficult trail covers just over 4 miles.

Explore Uckfield

A fascinating circular walk exploring our local town of Uckfield, visiting historic churches, and passing close to the site where the Piltdown Man was infamously discovered. A moderately difficult walk covering approximately 9 miles.

Bluebell Railway from Sheffield Park

A leisurely and scenic 7 mile walk through the beautiful Weald countryside, starting from the terminus of the heritage Bluebell Railway line at Sheffield Park.
